ABC: Man bought illegal gun for drug trade protection
The Cairns Magistrates Court has heard a man illegally obtained a handgun to protect himself from people involved in the drug trade.
The court was told police arrested Charles Lenard Osborne, 25, after they raided his Edmonton home in May.
During a search of the property, police found ammunition with a handgun on which the serial number had been removed.
Osborne pleaded guilty to six charges, including unlawful possession of a weapon.
His lawyer told the court his client obtained the gun from a friend to protect himself and had since taken steps to address his drug use.
Magistrate Anthony Gett fined Osborne $2,800 but did not record a conviction after hearing Osborne wanted to work in the IT or hotel industries.
He also ordered Osborne to forfeit the gun.
