Failed intercept and deaths at Chambers Flat

Queensland Police Union General President Ian Leavers has expressed dismay following two related traffic crashes that have resulted in deaths. At this early stage it would appear that two innocent individuals have tragically lost their lives.

“It is one of the most disturbing incidents that I have attended in my 20 year policing career,” Mr Leavers said.

“There are two separate collisions and two deceased persons.

Words honestly can’t describe the emotions of all the officers involved.

Obviously our thoughts are with the families of the deceased.

The officers involved are both experienced Traffic Branch Senior Constables with extensive operational experience.

They are struggling to deal with the reality of the tragedy that has occurred.

The incident is being thoroughly investigated by the Ethical Standards Command.

The offender has been apprehended and I understand that he provided a roadside breath sample that was in excess of three times the legal blood alcohol limit.

The vehicle was originally observed by police travelling at more than 50 kilometres above the speed limit.

Police attempted to intercept the vehicle however stood no real chance given that they where travelling in the opposite direction and had to perform a u-turn.

By the time police were able to turn their vehicle the offenders car was many hundreds of metres in front of them.

The offenders’ vehicle collided with a car then continued on another couple of kilometres before again crashing.”

Mr Leavers pleaded with all motorists to not drink and drive.

“As we have seen last night the consequences can be absolutely devastating.

Too many people have lost their lives this year and many families have endured the most horrible of emotional trauma,” Mr Leavers said.
